BATHTUB REFINISHING FAILURE, BE INFORMED

In my 34 years as a coatings developer, I've been asked numerous times about bathtub refinishing, bathtub reglazing, and tile refinishing. To begin, there is no distinction between bathtub refinishing and bathtub reglazing; they are identical. The most common inquiry is "does it work?"

Yes, and no, respectively. Bathtub restoration success and failure are equally determined by people skills and product quality. The people aspect is concerned with whether or not the technician has any genuine tried and tested experience. When dealing with a franchise business, the technician has most likely gone through a crash course in the process, and it is quite difficult to understand everything there is to know while simultaneously becoming skilled in the physical application.

I like to think of it like someone taking a crash course in "learning to drive a car." The individual can most likely learn to drive a car in a short period, but would you trust the newcomer to drive your family across the country?

This may appear to be a dramatic example, but considering what the bathtub refinisher is accountable for while restoring the bathtub in your home, I believe it works. Some aspects of refinishing can have major effects if not done correctly, which is why it is critical to be informed about bathtub refinishing before making a decision. To attach the coating to the bathtub surface, the technician must apply an acid etching agent to make the bathtub porous. This step should involve the use of portable ventilation equipment that will expel the fumes outside the house. Typically, the etching solution contains hydrofluoric, phosphoric, or hydrochloric acid. Most of us are aware that acids can cause damage to other surfaces if they are accidentally spilled or dripped on them. Another major issue is the potential for injury to pets and families if any of the spills come into contact with their skin.

The bathtub refinisher must then prepare for the refinishing coating application, which is commonly sprayed on (I wouldn't trust someone who promises to apply the finish using a roller or brush). The coatings are dangerous to inhale, and those with asthma or respiratory disorders are particularly vulnerable to exposure to these materials. Unfortunately, most water-borne coatings are insufficient for the wet climate of a bathtub, leaving the refinisher with limited options for coatings that will work.

Types of coatings:

Automotive coatings and primers are often not the greatest choices for bathtub refinishing, yet they are widely utilized and re-labeled as "porcelain coating" and primer. High solids aircraft coatings and primers are the most effective for bonding and wear, but they are also the most dangerous to use during application. Although epoxies have strong adhesion and moisture resistance, they can discolor over time.

Kits:

I don't advocate bathtub refinishing kits since they have a high failure rate, and once they start peeling, you've got a serious problem. The failing finish must be peeled before refinishing, which will increase the overall cost of the service is done by a skilled bathtub refinisher.

A refinished bathtub has an average life duration of 1 to 3 years (automotive) and 3 to 5 years (aviation coatings), depending on use.
